UV holds a post-pandemic oratorical contest

THE University of the Visayas organized the 14th run of the Vicente Gullas Interschool Oratorical Contest with the theme, “A well–built character in a citizenry helps make a nation great and strong” last January 26, 2024, at the Inday Teresing Teatro, UV Main Campus.

The oratorical contest is a tribute to the University of the Visayas Founder Don Vicente Gullas, and this year's celebration is part of the UV 105th Founding Anniversary year-long activities.

Moreover, along with the above-mentioned theme the participants presented their most coherent pieces that best represent their perceptions and ideals.

The contestants are senior high school students from various participating colleges and universities in Cebu, namely: Benedicto College, Cebu Doctors’ University, Cebu Eastern College, Cebu Sacred Heart College – Talisay, St. Theresa’s College – Cebu, University of Cebu, University of San Jose- Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, and the University of the Visayas.

Among the nine contenders, Ms. Anika Gabrielle V. Anoba from Benedicto College together with her trainer Mr. Malvar L. Jabonillo won the coveted first prize, followed by Ms. Ruth C. Galarpe from Cebu Doctors’ University and Mr. Marcus Jeigh S. Mission from the University of Cebu that owned the second and third place respectively.

“I’m very happy. I didn’t expect to win… I thought I would just get a consolation prize, considering that my competitors were all so great in orating their pieces. When I heard my name for the first prize, I was overjoyed,” said Ms. Anoba in an interview with The Visayanian Publication.
“The title of my piece was ‘What is a Good Citizen?’ This piece talks about how we are ignoring our responsibilities as citizens in our nation, and why [we are] continuing as a stagnant nation when we can change for the betterment of our country,” she added.

Meanwhile, comprising the esteemed board of judges were Ms. April Grace Chiongbian, Dr. Junifer Abatayo, and Dr. Corazon A. Prejoles, as the chair.

The event was spearheaded by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Present during the competition were the Treasurer for the Board of Trustees Dr. Leopold Gullas Lucero, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Anna Lou C. Cabuenas, and the students from various participating schools who served as audience.
