Nursing visits GCM Banilad

THE Gullas College of Medicine invited the University of the Visayas (UV) nursing students to a school caravan and tour to their campus at Banilad, Mandaue City as part of their marketing strategies, yesterday, March 12, 2023.

Students from Level 1 to Level 4 were catered and had a seminar session at their theatre.

Aside from that, they were given brochures and giveaways, providing them a sense of warmth and welcome to their college.

Chief Executive Director Dr. Jason Harold Yu gave the opening remarks and the overview of GCM.

"Last January 2021, the admin decided to improve the school both in facilities and in the academic heads and the team. If there is a Singapore-like Cebu, this is the Singapore-like school. It has a very nice ambiance, good for learning and for your mental health. The oxygen level here is better than in the city," Dr. Yu commented.

"Your purpose is not to become a machine... Everyone needs an opportunity... I was able to get the luxuries of life for 9 years. That's not because I chased after money, but because I chased after a dream," he added.

Assistant Dean Dr. Kitty Redula stated, "Why become a doctor? We have varied reasons why we choose medicine... There are things that money cannot buy. You want to do things that last. You want to do something that leaves an imprint to the world that money cannot buy, that's legacy."

"In my three years in the US as a nurse and witnessing situations and procedures I never saw before, my curiosity and ignorance met. I want to learn them. That curiosity led me to study medicine," she added.

SASC Director Dr. Mila Maruya shared that GCM has activities that bring life to the students.

"Be your own patient. We offer a lot of facets in balancing school and life, especially taking care of your mental health," she informed and proceeded to enumerate their diverse activities.

Giving the testimony of excellence, 4th year GCM student and former UV Administrator Dr. Joel Serad shared his experience and his reason why he chose GCM.

"Why GCM? The answer is, 'why not?'," he said, then stated 10 reasons. GCM Dean and an esteemed Neurologist in the Philippines Dr. Jose Juan Rafael Laico talked about the scholarships GCM offers.

3 categories for the scholarship:
  • Entrance Academic Scholarships
  • Continuing Academic Scholarships
  • Privilege Scholarships and Discounts

"Medical school would never be cheap... but because of the vision of our founder, Don Vicente Gullas, we now offer a lot of scholarships... We try to make it more available to a lot of people, offering it to those who dream of being a doctor, not having to worry financially," Dr. Laico stated.

"Everybody has the potental to do well. It's all about the effort... The top is always the one who works hard for it," he added.

3rd year nursing student and first season The Clash Champion Golden Canedo offered a breathtaking performance as she sang "Never Enough" from the musical movie, "The Greatest Showman".

Aside from the seminar, the students were toured around the school, from their upgraded laboratories to the enticing ambiance of their Library.

The program ended with the exciting part: the prize-filled question and answer, as well as the raffle draw for an all-paid dinner buffet at Bai Hotel for two.

The second batch for the school caravan would be on Friday, March 15, accommodating the Biology and Psychology students from UV.
